How to convert YouTube to WAV

  1. Copy the link from the video’s Share button or the address bar.
  2. Paste it above. WAV is already selected, so conversion starts on its own.
  3. Tap Download to save the WAV with its title and artist.

What WAV gives you

ezmp3 takes the best audio stream YouTube has, usually Opus at about 130 kbps and 48 kHz, and decodes it straight to 16-bit PCM at that same 48 kHz. Nothing goes through a second lossy encoder, which is what you want before you edit, time-stretch or chop samples in a DAW.

WAV can’t add detail the YouTube stream didn’t have: it is an uncompressed copy of a compressed source. For plain listening, M4A keeps YouTube’s original audio in a file about a twelfth the size.

What is inside the file

Sample rate48 kHz, the rate of YouTube’s Opus audio, so nothing is resampled
Bit depth16-bit PCM
ChannelsAs uploaded: stereo for almost all music
Bitrate1,536 kbps, about 11.5 MB per minute
Pitch, tempo, loudnessUnchanged: no resampling, no normalising

Using the WAV in a DAW or video editor

Drop it onto a track in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, GarageBand or Audacity like any other audio file. Set the project to 48 kHz if you can: a 44.1 kHz project resamples the clip on import, which is fine for most work but is one more conversion. Video editors such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro work at 48 kHz already.

Measured on our server: a 3½-minute music video became a 40.9 MB WAV in 16 seconds, and a 4¾-minute one a 54 MB WAV in 13 seconds.

Questions

Is WAV better quality than MP3?

It skips the MP3 encode, so it keeps everything YouTube’s stream has. It can’t restore what YouTube’s own compression already removed.

Does converting change the pitch or speed?

No. The audio is decoded at its own 48 kHz rate, so pitch, tempo and length match the video exactly.

Why 48 kHz and not 44.1 kHz?

YouTube’s Opus audio is 48 kHz, so keeping that rate avoids a resample. If you need 44.1 kHz for a CD, any audio editor converts it in one step.

Why is the WAV file so big?

WAV stores every sample uncompressed: about 11.5 MB per minute of stereo sound at 48 kHz.

Is there a length limit?

WAV files stop at 20 minutes, about 230 MB. For longer videos choose MP3 or M4A, which go up to 90 minutes.

Does the WAV include the song title?

Yes, the title and artist are written into the file’s INFO tags. WAV has no standard place for cover art, so the file has none.

Will it open in my DAW or editor?

Yes. 16-bit PCM WAV opens in every audio editor and DAW, including Audacity, GarageBand, Logic, Ableton Live and FL Studio.

Is it free?

Yes. No ads, no pop-ups, no account.
