How to download a YouTube video

  1. Copy the video’s link. In the YouTube app tap Share, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address bar.
  2. Paste it above. HD 1080p MP4 is already selected, so the download starts on its own.
  3. Tap Download when the button appears, and the video saves to your device.

Where the video is saved

  • iPhone and iPad: Safari puts it in Files › Downloads. Open it, tap Share, then Save Video to add it to Photos.
  • Android: it goes to your Downloads folder, where the Files app and most gallery apps find it.
  • Windows and Mac: it lands in your Downloads folder and plays in Photos, Media Player, QuickTime or VLC.

What HD means here

1080p is 1920 × 1080 pixels (1080 × 1920 for a vertical video): YouTube’s own H.264 picture with its AAC audio at about 128 kbps, copied into the MP4 as YouTube streams it, with nothing re-encoded. On our server a 3½-minute music video came out as an 84.6 MB file in 16 seconds.

If a video was uploaded smaller, you get the largest size it has, and the note under the Download button shows the real one. For smaller files, 720p or 360p are a third and a seventh of the size.

What can’t be downloaded

Private, members-only and age-restricted videos, which need a signed-in account; live streams until they have ended and finished processing; and playlists, which go one video at a time. At 1080p videos stop at 20 minutes: choose 720p for up to an hour, or 360p for up to 90 minutes.

Is it safe?

There is no app or browser extension to install and nothing to sign up for. The page shows no ads, opens no pop-ups or new tabs, and has one download button, the one that appears when your video is ready.

Is the YouTube video downloader free?

Yes. No ads, no pop-ups, no account and no paid tier.

Can I download YouTube videos in 4K?

No. 1080p is the largest, because YouTube only has 1440p and 4K as VP9 or AV1 video, which many phones and TVs can’t play from an MP4.

Can I download YouTube Shorts?

Will the video have sound?

Yes. YouTube’s AAC audio is copied into the MP4 with the picture.

How long can the video be?

20 minutes at 1080p, an hour at 720p and 90 minutes at 360p.

How long is my file kept?

Six hours. After that it is deleted from our server and the download link stops working.

Is it legal to download YouTube videos?

It depends on the video and where you live. Download only what you have the right to keep: your own uploads, videos under a free licence, or content the owner allows you to download.
